Resilience…  What is it?  And does it matter?

Well, the Oxford English Dictionary defines it as:

  • “The quality or fact of being able to recover quickly or easily from, or resist being affected by, a misfortune, shock, illness, etc.; robustness; adaptability.” – OED

Meanwhile, the Merriam Webster Dictionary would suggest resilience does matter…

  • “The ability to become strong, healthy, or successful again after something bad happens.” – MWD

The key word in the first definition being adaptability, infering as it does, change.  Change for the better, that is.

For the second the key word is successful.  And its not just about bouncing back from a problem, success here is placed in terms of looking forward too, of aspiration.

The standards bodies have also sought to define resilience.  Consider the following:

  1. “The capacity to resist being affected by an event” – ISO Guide 73
  2. “Resilience is the ability of an organization to manage disruptive related risk” – ISO 22300
  3. “The ability of an organization to anticipate, prepare for, and respond and adapt to incremental change and sudden disruptions in order to survive and prosper” – BS 65000

But when you put all of this together and consider resilience in terms of organisational resilience, risk management, business continuity or being available to your market and customers, what does this all mean?!?
